Keynote Speaker

Peter Rosset, PhD, is a researcher and postgraduate professor in the Department of Agriculture, Society and Environment at El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR) in Chiapas, Mexico, where he is part of the Grupo de Investigación sobre la Masificación de la Agroecología (https://www.ecosur.mx/masificacion-agroecologia/). He is also a permanent professor of the Programa de Pos-Graduação em Sociologia (PPGS) of the Universidade Estadual do Ceará (UECE), and a collaborating professor of the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Desenvolvimento Territorial na América Latina e Caribe (TerritoriAL) of the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), both in Brazil. And he is Bualuang ASEAN Chair at the Puey Ungphakorn School of Development Studies of Thammasat University in Thailand. For 15 years he was part of the technical team of La Via Campesina International. Today he is part of the team of La Via Campesina Mexico.

He is co-author, with Miguel Altieri, of the book Agroecología: Ciencia y Política (ICARIA, 2018). His other books include Revolución Agroecológica: El Movimiento de Campesino a Campesino de la ANAP en Cuba (ANAP and La Via Campesina, 2010), and Agroecología(s) Emancipatoria(s) para un Mundo donde Florezcan Muchas Autonomías (CLACSO, 2022) with Valentín Val. In 2015 Dr. Rosset was awarded by Latin American Scientific Society for Agroecology (SOCLA) for his contributions to agroecology throughout life, in 2017 by the National Association of Small Farmers of Cuba (ANAP-Via Campesina) for his contributions to the first twenty years of the Agroecology Movement “de Campesino a Campesino”, and in 2018 by the Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians (ACTAF) for his contributions to agroecology in Cuba. In 2022 he was named Professor Honoris Causa by the Universidade Estadual do Ceará (UECE), and in 2023 named Chair of Thammasat University in Thailand.

Tour 1_Before Coimbra, the Roman city

Coimbra has one of the best preserved Roman cryptoporticus in the Iberian Peninsula. A monumental work, on which the current Machado de Castro National Museum is based. This walking tour includes the descent to the cryptoporticus, the museum’s collections and also other areas associated with the construction of this urban space.

Tour 2_Rural echo in the city: spaces and writers

With a university that is over 700 years old, Coimbra has hosted many important authors of Portuguese literature. This walking tour begins with a visit to the Casa Museu Miguel Torga, where the writer lived. It passes by João Cochofel’s house, where in the mid-20th century there were tertúlias gathering intellectuals and artists. It also includes a stop at Jardim da Sereia, which until the 19th century was part of the Monastery of Santa Cruz, but became a central place for leisure and reflection in the upper town.

Tour 3_Building terroir: wines from the Bairrada region

Visit to a farm that produces, stores and sells wines in the Demarcated Region of Bairrada. With a secular experience of production, Bairrada gives rise to several wines and specially sparkling wines. The farm is located about 45 minutes by bus from the city of Coimbra, with transport provided by the organization of the congress.

Congress Dinner, Casa das Caldeiras restaurant (Coimbra)

The dinner takes place in a space that once had industrial functions connected to the old university hospitals, but all the equipment was preserved. The menu is based on Portuguese cuisine, consisting of several starters, a fish dish, a meat dish, various desserts and coffee. There is a vegetarian option, which must be requested in advance. In addition to non-alcoholic drinks, white, red and sparkling wines from the Bairrada Demarcated Region are included.
